The cardboard box itself also doubles for a bed and comes with a firm foam mattress and mattress protector to promote safe sleep habits. Each Ketchikan baby box includes clothing, a swaddle blanket, disposable diapers, a digital thermometer, a pacifier, a medicine dropper, and maxi pads and breast pads for new moms. The Finnish government began distributing baby boxes in the 1930s to give all children in Finland, no matter their background, an equal start in life. Ketchikan's baby box initiative was modeled after a similar program in Finland, which has among the lowest infant mortality rates in the world.
